Shanghai research center of Acupuncture and Meridian (abbreviated to Center) was founded on September, 2002 with the approval of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. The center is a nonprofit research institute with indepedent corporate capacity. The aim of Center: To estabish the innovate development system of the research of acupuncture and meridian to seek great breakthrough as a result of adopting the new operation mechanism and management pattern according to the development demand and current status of the research and the development strategy of national research of Traditional Chinese Medicine; to promote and improve the standarized system of clinical studies and emphasize the research for application; to build a system with autonomous intellectual property for the research and development of equipment used in treatment of acupuncture and meridian and the expansion of the market regarded as the main point. To promote the coordinated development of the up-to-date studies of the foundation and application of acupuncture and meridian with the synchronization of the research and development so as to maintain the leading position of our country in the research area of acupuncture and meridian. The construction object of Center: To establish a research and development base of acupunture and meridian with the basic study as the main task, with high standared and popularity and open to home and abroad. 1. Carry on the basic studies of the principle of the action of acupuncture and meridian through a couple of cases in which the acupuncture has an explicit clinical effect. 2. Carry on the clinical studies of the theory of acupuncture covering the aspects of the standard for diagnosis and treatment with acupuncture, the stimulative parameters with acupuncture and the coordinated action of acupuncture and other therapeutics. 3. Carry on the development and application studies of the equipment used in treatment of acupuncture and meridian. 4. Carry on the establishment of the database and the research of literature in acupuncture and meridian. The Council of Center is made up of ten directors from the related government departments, universities and research institutes including Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai Board of Health, Fudan University, Shanghai University of TCM, Shanghai Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian, Shanghai Science research center of Meridian, medical school of Tongji University, No.2 Shanghai Medical University and Second Miliary Medical University. Center implements the system of diector responsibility guided by the Council, and adopts the management pattern of scientific subjects. Center has the academic committee and offices under its management.
